Annual SHRED-A-THON event

For the last number of years our Rotary Club has partnered with the City of Port Moody, BEST Shredding and the Tri-Citiy News to have a Shred-a-Thon once a year, just after tax season.

Due to the pandemic in 2020, we didn’t hold our annual SHRED-A-THON event so we were eager to get back to it this June.  In past years we’ve run it for three hours with one shredding truck. However, we decided to add a second shredding truck and run the event for six hours this year and the community showed up in droves!

We set up in the roundabout in front of Port Moody City Hall. Residents drove up, gave their donation and were given a package of hand sanitizers. Then they continued to the opposite side of the roundabout where our team unloaded their confidential papers into bins. Once the large bins were full, they’s be rolled over to the shredding trucks, hydraulicly lifted into the hopper and shredded on site.

The community really showed up for this event. It was held from 9am – 3pm and there was already a line of cars at 9am and we were turning people away come 3pm. Some people came with a small bag of papers, others arrived with their SUVs stacked with boxes of old papers.

When one shedding truck was full, it would head off to unload and the second truck would take over. They leap-frogged in this manner all day and in the end we filled four shredding truckloads of paper.

The residents of Port Moody love this service and we are so grateful for all the donations received.

Due to the success of this year’s event, we are planning to hold a second one in the fall. Keep an eye on our social media for dates and details.

We greatly appreciate all the products, time and resources our sponsors donated to this project. Without them, this would not have been possible.
